i just wanted to use my dang credit card.

really.

$50 bucks in my beloved tribe's hot little orange paw.

and it kept giving me all the sh*t about using my paypal membership. i haven't used pay pal in yonks. i don't remember my password. or my user name.

and i know i could find that stuff out if i felt like being an evey more annoyed, stressed pregnant chick than i am.

but i'd rather spend my time suggesting that tribe just accept our payments, even if they are cc.

How about a feature allowing users to mark PM as spam? I've suddenly started receiving a lot of unwanted commercial offers via private messenger asking me to sign up for free ringtones by giving them personal identity information that I just don't give out to strangers. I should also point out that their user names and profiles look rather suspicious to boot.

I mention this because I've suddenly received a surge of these over the past week.

New message type: announcement

This is a problem that I've been mulling over for years, I don't have any really good answers but here's something half-baked that I'm going to throw out for discussion.

One of the systemic problems with Tribe.net is the way that announcements are made to a community. The listings subsystem completely sucks for reaching communities, and listings posted in tribes are pretty much routinely ignored or not seen at all. However, there are often half a dozen (or more, sometimes) closely-related tribes that one might want to post an announcement to.

The behavior I'm seeing now is that people post the exact same announcement to multiple tribes. This works well for getting the widest reach, but sucks for the reader. I know that what often happens with me is that I see half a dozen tribes that have three new messages in them, and when I go to each tribe it's the same three announcements. Because tribes are independent, you have to go into each tribe one at a time to clear the new message indicators for the tribes.

The need I see is for a special type of message: one that can be posted to multiple tribes in one fell swoop, but that is considered read in all tribes once it's been viewed. (This is much like a Usenet cross-posting, wherein one can post one message to multiple newsgroups.) Announcements would behave exactly like discussion posts, except that once the announcement was viewed in one tribe it would be treated as read in all of the user's tribes.

I would propose that these messages can be replied to, but that replies are specific to the tribe in which the message was replied to. In other words, if I post an announcement to tribe X, Y and Z and someone replies from Z, the reply only winds up in Z.

One potential problem with a system like this is abuse/spamming. This could be mitigated to some extent by limiting the number of tribes that an announcement could be posted to (maybe a maximum of 3-5) and then further rate-limiting the posting process (maybe one per person per day.)

Ideally, I would recommend adding ban-user-from-a-tribe functionality at the same time, so that moderators had the power to permanently boot anyone who abused this system.

I moderate several tribes, and one feature that would be really useful is the ability to split threads without deleting posts. Sometimes a thread goes off topic, which is distracting, but I dont want to censor people. It would be nice if you could click on all the off topic posts at one time, and move them all to a new thread with a new title.

Is open really a good thing? Is this simply driven by Google's desire to find more venues for harvesting data to best serve up advertising for your bi-pedal passive sheeple pleasure so you can continue propping up the economy, clicking and buying like an ADHD Methhead, further fattening their bank accounts?

Is becoming some well-intentioned but out of touch new-ager who entertains all alternative fodder with no scrutiny really the only alternative to being a citizen rather than some fat ass, dumbshit consumer sheeple creature suffocating from the the giant hole in their respective souls, leeching air from lungs that never knew how to breathe, much less fly?

Deleting the Brainstorm tribe

I have been pondering deleting the Brainstorm tribe over the past few weeks. I spend a lot more of my time on the Gold Star tribe, and they drive new development a lot better than this tribe. I have been extremely frustrated by reading this tribe and the number of off-topic comments, subjects not related to brainstorming, and the general uselessness of this tribe -- the majority of the people just want the bugs fixed, and I am not going to be able to do much in the way of development since I'm almost finished implementing the projects that were 95% to 99% finished when I took over.

I am going to allow comments on this subject for about a week. If nobody has a truly compelling argument for me, this tribe is history.

Sending Messages to Multiple Recipients; Redux

I found this thread while trying to figure this out:
http://brainstorm.tribe.net/thread/16bc4e5e-1385-46cf-a522-25fa723123a6

But I have a question about the "listings" method.

When you prepare a listing, at the point where you choose which members, emails and tribes to post your listing to, it says at the top:

"Your post will be shown to everyone in the listings directory and on members' my tribe.net page.
You can promote your listing to more people below."

What, exactly, does "the listing directory" consist of?
And do they mean that your listing shows up on EVERY members' home page?

The second statement seems to indicate that the first statement does not refer to the members and tribes you choose to designate as recipients "below".

This is really unclear and I don't want folks other than who I'm specifically designating to receive the message.

Anyone have any answers or suggestions, or can point me to where I can get some?
Thanks!

Hi Darren (and Brainstormers) .

I know you intend to change the first page that users now land on when they hit "Tribe Chat" ( http://melbourne.tribe.net/template/TribeChat.vm) - but it is certainly clear that lots of folks think you MUST download a program in order to use tribe chat..

I assume that the two programs simply have more whistles and bells - but I was able to use Tribe Chat without downloading anything - and I think that needs to be more clearly stated on the page that my browser jumps to when I hit the tribe chat button

People seem to miss "For best results when not using our chat applet, use " means that the applet does not have to be downloaded..

Some information on troubleshooting - especially enabling Java and disabling popup blockers would be also good..

Is there anyone here who could write a troubleshooting statement with advice to users ??? This would save Darren having to do it..

if when trying to send an event invitation there was a picture of each friend next to their name?!

It could be incredibly time consuming to send an event invitation to friends, considering people change their names all the time which could include random #$%^^^&* little signs. Another issue is when more than one person has the same name like Vanessa. What if I only want to send my event invite to one of the 3 Vanessa's? I end up clicking on a lot of friend's names just to find out who they are because I can't recognize the name.

Another great thing would be to add in parenthesis what town each friend is located, in the friend list that shows up when sending an event invitation. I hate to spam people unnecessarily. If there's something going on in Venice, I don't want to send the event to a friend that lives in Seattle.

Another awesome thing would be if, while sending an event invite, your entire friends list with pictures & location could appear on the same page like when you try to send a personal message.

Even when I had my $5/month membership I started to get a limit message, that's why I stopped my membership. If you're gonna offer a paid membership, it should be worthwhile for the people.

Fixing tribe...the next step

OK, so I've been thinking a lot about how to get tribe moving ahead. Raising cash to keep it alive and fund some hardware improvements was definitely the first step, and it looks like it was moderately successful. Not enough yet to hire another engineer, but enough to keep the lights on a bit longer and keep the server fans spinning. It's time to move to the next stage or all the gains will be lost. If tribe doesn't show some significant improvement, then few are going to bother to renew their membership, and it's back to the slow decline into irrelevancy.

Obviously, Darren is way overloaded and overextended. There's no way he can be expected to do all the technical work that needs to be done, between overall maintainence and implementing & testing new features, while also responding to user's technical questions.

What tribe needs is a different sort of support from the users. Tribe users love this site, and we're willing to pitch in to keep it going. Tribe needs to take advantage of this loyalty by allowing users to take on some of the technical & administrative tasks. I propose the creation of a managably small "Tribe Volunteer Corps", that takes on this role.

I propose starting with five or so volunteers filling these roles:

1) Administrative assistant: Answer user questions & complaints, seek out functionally unmoderated tribes and recruiting new moderators, act as liasons in official tribes, and carry out basic duties such as backups.
2) Junior developer: As Darren commented, there's a lot of partly implemented or simply implemented features that tribe could roll out in short order, if there were only some developer time to look at them. There's plenty of seasoned Java developers out there who would love the opportunity to move things along. Overtime these people would come to learn the code base and would be able to implement more complex functionality, but the initial role would be the basic stuff.
3) QA engineer: Someone who handles testing of new features, investigates bugs and regresses fixes.
4) Volunteer management/project management: Someone to give some oversight to the other volunteers, in terms of tracking projects and evaluating priorities.

Community-based development has been an incredibly successful model, giving us world class operating systems, servers & services, browsers and applications. I'm not talking about open-sourcing the site or anything like that. I realize that tribe won't and probably shouldn't go down that path. However, for relatively little expense and risk, tribe could buy itself some very talented and motivated folks who want nothing more than to give a little time to keep their favorite site humming along and keeping up with the times.

Tribe? Darren? Wendy? Mark?

Whaddya say?

Out of all the communities I have joined, I keep coming back to tribe. Sure there are things the others have over tribe, but overall it is still the best. I do wish that tribe was more like myspace in its options for profile backgrounds and its music capabilities. You'll probably tell me now that I can get these with the premo, but I really cannot afford that yet, beside I feel that I pay enough for the internet. By the way, what does the premo actually offer. Maybe when I get me tax rebate.

If I'm remembering correctly, and I'm pretty sure I am, the personal messages table is huge and is one of the major causes of database slowth.

My gut says that Tribe could get a performance boost if personal messages were deleted after six months. That might even be tied into premium features-- personal messages only get deleted after six months for non-premium members.

Hello -- I have a suggestion for the display of friends' blogs.

I think it would make sense if the "most-recently commented" blog stayed on top, instead of the "most-recently posted." It would work like tribe threads, and would facilitate more dialog in blogs.

We don't want to go searching down the list for blogs we might want to watch. And if it disappears off the page, forget it. It might as well not exist anymore.

What do you all think?

Idea for the Tribe.net tribe descriptions!

It doesn't happen too often, this bug or server problem where we have to empty our cache, sign off/on, delete cookies. But the couple times it HAS happened, the membership skyrockets for the Bugs tribe. And the folks who are not able to see any new messages won't see the instructions on how to make Tribe.net work.

So...I thought it might be a good idea to have that in the official Tribe.net tribes description area! In EVERY one of the descriptions of the official tribes.

And in all of those descriptions, there could be a link over to the F.A.Q. tribe, where COMPLETE instructions could be posted. For as many browsers as possible. The exact steps, in what order, etc. That will always give people a way to find those instructions with a handy link.

Since it would be an "old" thread, it would show up for any new future server thing for everyone. And having that link would keep the Bugs tribe from being deluged with very confused people, who can't see the message after they posted it (this last time).

I only use the Mac Firefox. The idea is that whatever instructions that are posted would be simple enough for me to go to any other computer browser, with no knowledge at all of that kind of browser, and to be able to follow the steps, in order, to be able to get back on Tribe.net. Don't leave out steps thinking that "everyone knows THAT" because everyone does NOT know that. LOL!

Remember, we just had the problem, and all those posts were from people who did not know "that". That = signing out, clearing cache, deleting cookies, closing browser (did you all close the window or quit the browser altogether?). Then reopening a window (or restarting the browser), coming back to Tribe.net and signing in again.

Did anyone shut down and start the computer? Did anyone just restart the computer?

It would be nice to have those things available, because when folks needed the help the most, they couldn't SEE anything posted.

Best of all, it doesn't cost money. It doesn't require rewriting massive amounts of code. It does require some writing, which someone could write out for Darren so he can just copy and paste to the description area of all the official Tribe.net tribes. And folks can contribute the "pathways" on finding where the cookies are, and how to clear the cache, on each browser that they use. That can be copied and pasted into the F.A.Q. tribe.

I have Mac Firefox covered. What other browsers do people use here, and could they write out the pathways to get to cookies and cache? Thanks!

Sorting Friends by Location

A feature that would help me out a lot is the ability to sort my friends into groups based on location. I am connected to friends across the country and the world here and when I post events it would be really helpful to me not to have to spend 15 minutes un-checking everyone who isn't local when i send out invites or spamming all of my far away friends. Being able to simply click "Bay Area" or "Boston" rather than all that checking and un-checking of individual friends would just rock.

I'm a premium member and i really don't need another IM service, but better ways to use existing Tribe functions.
Thanks so much for hearing my suggestion.

Can someone please tell me why my bio and all of my tribe friends are listed on a site I have never been to or heard of? I didn't think this was Tribes style. I feel cheated and betrayed. If I wanted my profile to be farmed out, I would join Facebook.

I apologize if this has already been discussed.

Google Ads on premium - suggestion

Hello,

When reviewing the features of a premium account I noticed that Google Ads are no longer visible.

Presumably there is no option to add back the Google ads. If not, perhaps I can suggest allowing the ads to be enabled for people who like & want them.

On a personal level I find the ads interesting & helpful at times; and in any case from a business perspective with an interest in internet marketing, seeing them is useful. I feel the same about "junk mail" in my letterbox - people have often paid big money to design creative marketing pieces which I can learn from free of charge.

Simply speaking them, from my perspective, the removal of Google ads is a downgrade.

Alex

This is how to delete a tribe you moderate

SO how do you go about deleting a tribe you moderate.
I'm assuming it's a tribe with a small membership.

1) kick all members off the tribe
2) kick yourself off the tribe

That's all there is to it, the tribe goes on to add clutter to tribes servers,
BUT you don't have to deal with it anymore. Mark will just have to buy
more servers....... So there you have it.

Known Bug Round Up

Yes I know this is the brainstorm tribe.. so lets brainstorm real fixes...
I've been watching the bug report tribe for a long time.. someone always has a bug or two...
This one struck me as a prime example of how we can help.
http://bugs.tribe.net/thread/e62eee5c-7b36-471a-b44b-41392a8681db
It seems that the servers do indeed have issues and it involves cookies... I have seen on other forums ie segernet.com that has a (delete all cookies set by this board) key . 10 more threads with different names will have the same issue just worded and or titled differently.

My question is would help with the data base corruption that Tribe seems to be fighting?

Secondly how could we help track bug issues?

...guaranteed to get shot down, but..

Why does Tribe allow people to have multiple "alts" to begin with? Could they not limit someone to just one login based on IP? If this person is unsubbed based on this IP, they can't join back from that IP. Would solve a lot of our problems.

refunds, part II

219 posts on the subject of the lack of refunds to the unsubbed.

not one single one of the posts is an answer or comment from tribe.net.

still no refund, still no answer to my private messages to tribe, by the way.

Make all the polyanna excuses for tribe.net, engage in all kinds of speculation about what I did to get unsubbed, go into all the babble about why I should or should not have been unsubbed, quibble over your misinformed notions of contract law. Go to town, folks. It's been entertaining, which is why most of us are here. It is all, however, totally irrelevant.

HERE IS WHAT IS RELEVANT: Tribe.net said it would issue a refund previously, when it unsubbed Bruce. It has not. And that was months ago. And now it won't even answer the question on the subject of my refund.

Tribe.net won't explain itself. It just flat out refuses to account for itself.

When a web company starts taking consumer's money, there needs to be some accountability. I don't care if it is only $40. When you take people's money, you are accountable.

And now members are suggesting in numerous threads that the premium subscription money is being used instead to support a black jack website, after it was represented that the money would be used to improve tribe.net Is this true?

What does it take to get Tribe.net to answer questions on these money concerns?

How much do I have to shame them and poke fun at them before they will answer?

Is there just no accountability at all?

I want diversity and originality. I want sex and music. I like silence but I also like the contrast of a bitching rock tune or a hypnotic trance tune. Come on Darren please give us,at least the option of some, music.

Flickr employs some method of rending a photo incapable of downloading, at user discretion. Useful for copyright protection & such. And given all the buzz around what to post or not post these days, I would like to see the "friends only" designation mean that the "friends only" photo cannot be downloaded.

It would be great if you could add a friend feature similar to the one on LiveJournal.com.

On that web site? All you have to do is point your clicker to your desired friends icon. Then you can add them or remove them at will. Same thing with the communities too!

Thanks!

Policey on Registered Sex Offenders Blogging on Tribe

Dear Tribe,

I am directing to this thread: http://bm.tribe.net/thread/6b85822a-9216-4c0d-a21d-a276e899b6b5

Take your time reading it…it has the proof in it. You have a registered sex offender who was caught and arrested on Dateline’s TV program now using Tribe to con people into supporting him. He has started a Tribe blog and boasts of support there too. It is highly disturbing to me that he said this:

“I’ve been working to find ways to use this lesson, to share it with other people who really need it, and I will hopefully be able to use my experience to help heal others who are hurting inside. One thing I would like to put out there is that I’m here to listen. I won’t judge, attack or criticize and I may even have some ideas to share with some of you from my difficult lessons. I am available to you in ways that I never was before.”

This is a prime example of “grooming behavior”. He clearly wants to attract other pedophiles to tell him all about their dark deeds and he promises to not judge. It is also a way to get other victims to tell him their pain so he can get off on it. Is this what Tribe is about, giving a forum for this? He has already demonstrated he uses message boards to troll for sex with 13-year-old girls. I would hate for Tribe come apart for ficilaitating his next crime. When I did Google searches on him one thing came up that it is rumored that Perverted Justice has employees participating in the Burning Man tribes…maybe tribe is going to be their next story.

Read this article http://www.glidemagazine.com/Articles/51944/Buck-Down-of-The-Mutaytor.html where I found this quote: “In addition to this, Perverted Justice placed people under assumed identities in Burning Man forums on Tribe.net. which became a VERY fevered discussion that is STILL going on to this day.”

Unpopularity as a feature

Perhaps it's best to keep tribe small and a manageable size. Keep it exclusive and independant. MySpace and Facebook have no appeal because they are so popular, and when a site gets huge (and corporate) it quickly becomes diluted and homogenized.

The same thing happens in pop culture. You find a great new band and nobody knows them. All of a sudden they get popular and people you don't even know (or like) are humming their songs, and the only place you can see your favorite band in concert is from the back of a stadium. Tribe is the great band that still plays venues where you can actually see them.

In some ways, tribe's unpopularity is it's best feature. People don't come here because everyone else is coming here. They come because they like it here, and that reinforces the culture of the site. Maybe instead of thinking of tribe as unpopular and needing to become more popular like those other sites, we should be happy that the place is not filled with lowest common denominators.

I like that tribe is independent and not corporate.

I had a premium account for about 33 days. Paid for six months, in advance. Trying to help you out.

Then I was unsubbed by the silent alt known as the TOUGUY, for reasons only know for certain to the TOU GUY.

That was about five days ago. Still no refund. I've sent a few emails to tribe.net requesting a refund. No answer.

What's the deal? Are you broke, already spent the money? Don't think you have to give refunds when you unilaterally unsub people without warning? Running a Ponzi scheme, perhaps? Or just unfamilar with the concept of customer service?

My guess is that you have a zero balance in your paypal account. Send more money, dad!

Well, so long and thanks for all the squid. And either send me my damn refund or reinstate my account.

Has anyone upped their membership without PayPal?

Do I have to go down to the address on the website? Is there anything there?

Tribe for Buisness?

I'm curious as to why tribe has not tried to expand their business marketing area? I see tons of Belly Dancers, real estate agents, photographers, etc. who have discussed having a myspace account for their buisness. Many have even said that they have gotten little to no leads from tribe. Why has tribe not acted on this?

I will be last person to try and get tribe to reflect these other sites.. as I really dislike myspace/facebook... but they may be on to something there. Perhaps an ads tribe... or a central place for people to post listings, contacts or even their websites might help improve traffic on our beloved site.

Is there such a place on tribe?

Any thoughts?

HOW ABOUT A NEW PROFILE STYLE TEMPLATE AND LAYOUT???

AFTER USING TRIBE FOR A WHILE I WOULD LIKE TO SUGGEST A COUPLE OF NEW PROFILE STYLE TEMPLATES......THE FIRST WOULD BE FOR ONE THAT UTILIZES THE (IN MY OPINION)WASTED SPACE THAT RUNS VERTICAL ALONG BOTH SIDES OF A PROFILE PAGE.........SEEMS TO ME EVERY TIME I VIEW ONE ON NO MATTER WHAT SIZE MONITOR WHEN I SEE THE PROFILE OF A TRIBE MEMBER ON BOTH SIDES OF IT ARE EITHER EMPTY SPACE OR ADVERTISEMENTS ......MY OPINION WOULD BE THAT THIS IS UNWANTED AND WASTED SPACE WHICH COULD BE BETTER USED TO SPREAD OR SPACE OUT A MEMBERS PROFILE AND MINIMIZE HAVING TO CONSTANTLY SCROLL UP AND DOWN THE PROFILE PAGE.......................

MY SECOND BUT MOST PREFERABLE CHOICE WOULD BE TO ENABLE MEMBERS TO CUSTOM DESIGN THEIR OWN PERSONALIZED STYLE TEMPLATE AND STYLE LAYOUT SO THEY CAN PLACE THINGS WHERE THEY WOULD LIKE THEM TO BE APPEAR AND FOR THE MEMBERS TO BE ABLE TO CHOOSE COLORS FOR FONTS AND WALLPAPER AND SUCH......EVEN TO CHOOSE A WALLPAPER THAT THEY CAN UPLOAD AND/OR DESIGN FROM PHOTOS AND SUCH....IT COULD REALLY GIVE MEMBERS SUPERIOR FREEDOM TO DESIGN THEIR OWN PROFILE AND TO EXPRESS THEMSELVES WITH MORE CREATIVITY AND PERSONALITY..........SIMILAR TO WHAT MYSPACE.COM OFFERS AND MANY OTHER SITES

I HOPE THESE SUGGESTIONS SOMEDAY SOON BECOME A REALITY......AND IF ITS TOO COSTLY TO IMPLEMENT THESE CHANGES TO THE SITE MAYBE MEMBERS WOULD NOT MIND PAYING FOR THIS ABILITY.....MAYBE MAKE IT A PREMIUM MEMBERS FEATURE

JUST SOME THINGS TO CONSCIDER FOR ALL......

THANKS FOR TAKING THE TIME TO READ THIS AND GIVING IT SOME THOUGHT!

My only thought so far

So I've been using tribe for a few months now, started after burningman and branched out to find a few more tribes from there. Yesterday I started to look into the Computers & Internet section, as I own and operate a small web based business. I was a little bit shocked that there was no obvious way to sort tribes based on number of members. So with 1100 tribes in this category, I had to browse my way through 50 at a time, when there are probably less than 50 tribes in that entire mess with over 100 members. How about a "sort by number of members" button or by latest activity? This would make it much easier to find "active tribes"

I'm guessing in advance that there may already be a feature like this, but I don't know how to use it, or that it has already been suggested...

New approach

The first time I ever appeared in this tribe, it was to explain that ignoring trolls is the ONLY effective method of getting rid of them.

I explained that for it to work, the entire tribe has to understand this and have the discipline and smarts to stick to the plan.

I have seen it work in smaller tribes with smart people. They will stand together and ignore a troll as soon as they recognize it for what it is. And the troll will give up.

I swear it works. Wouldn't I know, having tried my hand at trolling myself?

I agree with others that this tribe should be free of trolling, though not necessarily free of trolls, as long as trolls don't come here to troll, trolls can have valuable things to say. They are as much a part of Tribe as anyone else, you know.

So I will give you a demonstration.

For the next two weeks, I will completely ignore every attempt that is made to troll me in this tribe.

You watch. The level of trolling output from my "little gang" will drop from its current boil to a slow simmer.

A simple suggestion

When you click on a link someone has posted, it opens in the same window. This can be annoying, because if you follow this link elsewhere beyond a certain number of clicks it can become a hassle to navigate back to tribe.

I propose that tribe change the behavior to opening links in a new tab (for browsers that support tabbed browsing). This would bring about a marked improvement in user experience (at least in THIS user's opinion).

Let me know what you think!

I'll add my voice to the chorus (no puns intended) of needing music and any idea of either beating them or joining them?

Hi, I'm David, listed as David Scott on tribe. Loving it, it is my first, simultaneous with Bayarealinkup, from the first of this year. I'd love to know how big Tribe is , how many active members, how many subtribes, any ways of comparing to the other majors which are, correct me if I'm wrong, myspace, and facebook.

Suggesting an advertising campaign, designed to either link with the others or take over all or more likely a larger part of their market share., I think linking is in the world's best interest, though it may be an insurmountable challenge. As a musician (and teacher) myspace has tribe beat on only one count, the ability to stream music.

any chance of offering that? That would be the best!

Do you know 4 out of 5 people I tell about Tribe are under the misassumption that it's strictly a Jewish thing? Erasing that rumor could boost Tribe's membership and revenue.

I typed this to my friends recently:

Tribe is neither Jewish (though everyone seems to think so), not singles-oriented. It is a community of those who like to build community and networking. Has hundreds (maybe much more) of subgroups, like hiking, dining, movies. It hooks up those interested in cultural anthropology, and math and Noe Venable and Jeff Buckley and Bjork , etyomology, neuropsycologly, neurobiology, live music, Fire Drum Circles, Astronomy and singles. All of those are groups I've joined (There are more). With communication between members and among members of these groups, think of the synergy, the grass roots political, world/culture changing possibilities of this medium.

what are your thoughts?
Changes to the TOU

What changes would we like to see made in the TOU?

First, let me say I've tried to find the complete TOU, and haven't found it. With that in mind, some of these suggestions might already be in place.

Would a change that makes profiles without content, that seemed to be designed to be spams be worthwhile? I'm talking about profiles like the ringtone guy. No content generated, it seemed they were just set up for spamming the community. I'm okay with people using Tribe to further their business, as long as they are actual community members. Members who post more than just about their business. I am aware that some businesses are less of a bother than others. Here in Denver we have a Realtor who posts rental openings in the local posts. They haven't yet spammed anyone, that I know of. I know this is a fine line to walk, but the Ringtone guy was fairly easy to identify as a nuisance. And there's another guy from Atlanta, with the name of Colleen, posting $1000 an hour modeling jobs on some of the photography sites. My first thought was this is the same ringtone guy. He hasn't yet spammed, but he seems to be walking closer to that line, posting unlikely business opportunities.

In the past, there have been some complaints about the TOU. So what else would we like to see in or out of the TOU?

"Hey! There is a great ringtone site around, www.4flick.com. If you throw your cell number in and verify your pin, and then put in "TRIBE" and you get all free ringtones! Awesome, huh?! Thank me later!"

Also how do you forward these spam emails to the TOU GUY? Can that be done?

Tribe Saved ? Next Issue Part 2 - Cash is King !

Income keeps tribe.net going ... and a healthy income will see tribe.net prosper and improve as a service and in functionality.

Now Tribe has revenue from subscriptions - is that revenue stream healthy enough to be used effectively to strengthen the company and site - rather than just maintain it ?

While I think Tribe should resolve its Known Bugs and Single Points of Failure - the talk of new whiz-bang features does not get me exited as I would be happy just to see consolidation and stability. New features will not drive many new users to the site unless those new features are Unique Selling Propositions and the best USP Tribe has is its current user base - what cool folks to hang out with LOL.. New Features will not generate substantial income. Only substantial income will ensure Tribe is stable and here for years to come..

Where can Tribes new income generated by subscriptions best be invested to make Tribe.net truly sustainable ?

The answer may be Tribe selling advertising direct to purchasers with base employment cost held low through performance based commissions paid to advertising sales agents rather than tribes current arrangement with Google. Subscription Revenue may provide the seed funding for an advertising sales department to really get Tribe in a robust financial position and Darren to get the hookers, drugs, sports car and yacht he deserves :)

Tribe has a captured market in its users - and also a geographically defined area of marketing in San Fransicso and Burning Man. This makes marketing more simple and straightforward and prospects more easy to identify.

It is logical for Tribe to focus on its strong heartland - San Fran & BM. However this view does raise the pertinent question - is Tribe a San Fransicso based and focused organisation with other "guests" - or is Tribe a "Global Community". Regardless of the answer, it makes sense for tribe to "pick the low hanging fruit" and engage in revenue producing advertising focused on San Franscisco and also Burning Man - and that's from an enthusiastic supporter and user from Melbourne Australia - me.

The obvious buying objection from potential purchasers buying advertising space might be that Premium Users have ads turned off - the equally obvious way to practically overcome this is by giving premium users the option of turning ads on and off (if the number of Premium Subscribers is deemed significant enough to effect sales) . But the better way to overcome such a buying objection is that visitors to the site via google searches still see advertisements placed on Tribe.

What's other folks view on this ?

but if there is one of a very few things that increasingly troubles me is people on tribe posting "natural" and "nude" photos of their kids for public consumption.

While I can understand the pride and joy parents have regarding their kids, I kind of think these particular types of images should not be posted for public view on what is essentially an adult site. It seems like common sense to me.

Tribe Photo Albums

Forgive me if this has been addressed before, but without a search I can't be sure...

Several of my tribes have large numbers of photos in their photo albums. Photos that aren't necessary anymore and I would love to delete.
BUT
I don't have the time to sort through 400 photos and wait and wait and wait for them to come up 6 at a time. Or wait and wait and wait to see the "show all" page. Again.

Either of these two things would be VERY helpful in deleting old photos (and help to free up some space on the servers, too). And adding both would be even better.

1. Radio buttons to select photos for deletion
2. Once you pull up the "show all" page of photos, if it would go back to that view AFTER you delete the first photo.

I know this takes time, but it would be just dandy if we could see either or both of these. Thanks.

Homepage control

It would be delightful if we had more control over the layout of our home pages and to be able to organize them differently than what the options are currently.

For instance it would be nice to be able to organize friends and tribes into different catagories in one module (instead of individual modules).
Drag and drop power would be good too. Already exisits for the module as a whole, but to be able to grab, drag and drop a tribe (or a friend) into a different position might be really handy.
The ability to have rows as well as columns would be a plus.

Believe me when I say I know there are bigger fish to fry here. I'm not saying this needs to be done by 5 PM next Friday, just saying that at some point in our future I would love to be able to personally customize my homepage.

Thanks for reading this.
Cheers,
: D

That'd be my #1 most appreciated addition to Tribe.

I mean, to be able to chat real-time with other Tribe members? How awesome would that be? Or, how bothersome.........

BUT! I'd love the opportunity at least. More than music or this or that - chat would be a very well-used feature.

When's that being added?

Some tribes have grown so big,,,

It might be time to see if we can have a Moderator and Co-Moderator.
This could help end some of the trolling and miss use of tribe forums.
I am the moderator of a few tribes, one in particular would be great to have a co-moderator
just to keep things rolling along.

The other advantage is if the main Moderator gets kicked-off tribe or un-scirb we would not need to do the whole election thing.

Darren would this be a big deal to put into use?

A nondestructive solution to the inactive group issue?

Let's see if we can get a win-win on this one.

Reading through, I find one of the members who seems concerned that current material is going to get lost in the mass of tribes that never seem to see a post. He would like to see inactive and underutilized tribes deleted. Tribe management doesn't like that idea, because visitors like to visit that material, and a fair amount of Tribe's ad revenue owes its existence to those visits. At least one user states that he feels that this means that Tribe intends to "screw" the users who, he says, provides the content Tribe relies on for its revenue, without seeming to see the other side of that issue - what about the users who contribute content, enjoy the idea of it being read, but then find themselves busy living their lives offline? Having their work wiped out and going to waste may be convenient for somebody who just showed up and is trying to gain visibility, but it may not be so convenient for them. Still, there is a point - if one is trying to find other users on Tribe right now, currently active members with whom to carry on a discussion, finding them is difficult, because while one is the lone active voice on one group, somebody else may be the only one on another, and how do the two of you find each other?

The win-win solution, I think, would be to have Tribe facilitate that. On the front page of Tribe, show the most active tribes, and in each category, allow the visitor the option of seeing the tribes listed in order of level of recent posting (say, in the last week). Give a similar option for those looking at a listing of their own tribes. Currently active users would be able to find each other, discussions would happen, that would draw more people in, and nobody would have to worry about the loss of old material. It would involve a lot of work for the Tribe staff, maybe more than the staff feels up to taking on, but perhaps this would come reasonably close to meeting the needs of all involved?

Hi,

Maybe this has already been requested... but I'd love to be able to delete unwanted invitations, just like deleting email. For ex., I have friends out of state who just do bulk e-vites, and it clogs up my events list. Then there are the cuddle parties I just don't care to attend, etc.

Thanks,

Darren, it'd be nice to have that 'in response to:' tag on that most recent post.

When posts are viewed sorted by 'newest first' there's no 'in response to:' tag in the most recent post (on the top of the page). Unless the poster tags the message with someone's name, it can be a chore to find out who that person has responded to. This can be rather irksome on longer threads. I assume this is more of an oversight than a bug.

Thoughts?

It would be much better and easier to stay on top of friends posts and blogs if you could see more than 20 of the "newest items" in the "My Friends Recent Activity" module on our homepages. I don't have a lot of people added to my friends list - but some of them love to add 10 or more photos at once so it is easy to miss a mates blog...

Could the maximum number of friends posts that you can track from your homepage "friends posts" module to be increased from 20 to say 50 or 100 ?

The text in the module I am speaking of reads ;

"Display <<drop down box>> newest items in this module when it is shown.
Clicking the "view all" button will display all items. "

I post listings to promote my costume business and to try and lure people over onto my own tribe, but everytime I post a listing and try to go to it, I get the message "Unable to find specified listing." This has happened several times.
What is going on? Is it something that I'm doing wrong?

How about a new ""Random Tribe"" button ?

I have no idea how hard or otherwise this would be to organise..

But sitting here, with my 100 odd tribes, friends blogs and bookmarks all read and after snooping around a few places - I'm Bored !!!

How about a "Random Tribe" button that I could hit to take me to a random tribe to see something new?

I think many users might like it (???)

It might also be good for newbies....

Thoughts ?

<<This flamming and trolling is the essence of Tribe.net, in my opinion.>>

Grundig said <<This flamming and trolling is the essence of Tribe.net, in my opinion.>>

Now that is an interesting statement....

Sometimes, I really like some of the humour and troll-type posts in other tribes..

At the risk of bringing down a hail of abuse directed towards me - I think that flaming for its own sake and trolling are counter productive to achieving the goal of this tribe and there is way too much of it in Brainstorm.

I am not saying we should be run with oppressive rules – but should demand of each other than we stay on track as much as possible..

Agree or disagree ?

calmly, somewhere down the road:

It could be that some who have already signed up - and those considering signing up - might become hesistant in their support if they do not see corrections to long-standing problems and improvements upon what is already here.

See ya down the road.

i have a few i moderated but no one has used them in ages. and when i went to create a tribe recently, something went wrong and it created it but told me that there was already a tribe named the same thing (only cuz it seemed to have NOT worked, but it did), so i renamed, started over, invited people... only to find that now i have two tribes with *slightly* different names. i just want one!!

email features

We have discussed making it easier to sort email. Another thought that just occurred to me, is some sort of a compose feature. One that I can go to and not have to hunt up a profile. I could compose and have a drop down menu of my friends, so I could designate one or more folks to get the email. If it were designed right, it could only select from the people who are your friends. This way we could limit the possibility of spam. If you start getting spam from a friend, they have either been hacked, or you can talk with them and tell them to stop. And worst case, drop them as a friend.
