Suggestion for a new privacy feature

I am sure this has been brought up before, but I'd love to see an option for making parts or all of your profile visible only to someone who is logged into Tribe.

I know I can make photos and blog posts "friends only". I don't use my full real name on Tribe. However, there are enough bits and pieces out there online so that someone could, with minimal effort, connect my real name with my Tribe profile. Some of the information I present in my profile (such as my interests) is completely within the norms of the Tribe community, but can put off some of the conservative types out there, and I depend on some of those people for professional reasons. I don't think people would go to the trouble of creating a Tribe profile to get to my info, but I'd like to be able to prevent the casual browser from stumbling onto it.

Any thoughts?

we got scammed?

There's an article about Zynga over on slashdot this evening. One of the comments from a former tribe employee implies pretty strongly that the money taken by our subscription fees got siphoned off to fund Zynga rather than to prop up/improve tribe.

Pretty shitty behavior if it's true.

I was one of the strident folks calling for the creation of the subscription program, and I signed up for a year. Something got screwed up and it wasn't renewed at the end of the year, but by then it was pretty clear that all the money was going nowhere that benefitted tribe so I didn't bother to pursue it. The NSA folks had shown up by then but at that point there wasn't even a wall left to write on.

Tribe is dead, but sadly, there isn't anything around to replace what it once provided. Oh well.

I used to work for Mark Pincus at his "failed" social networking site, Tribe.net. It didn't
fail, he ran it into the ground because it wasn't making the money he wanted - meaning
it wasn't providing him with three mansions and two private aircraft the way Zynga has.
It's kind of interesting though, Mark was starting Zynga exactly when Tribe.net users
asked us to start a subscription program to raise money to buy needed hardware for
the site. Surprise - we made $30,000 the first month, and any time I asked for money
for new database servers or to pay contractors, they claimed there was no money. It's
pretty obvious to me where the money went. This is NOTHING. This story has been
picked up by large media and is only going to get bigger - I was interviewed last week
by Details Magazine about what a scumbag Mark is. Sadly you can't read that until
March - but that's justr a measure of how fucked this company is. Up until this scandal,
they were claiming Zynga would IPO in a month or two. That talk has all vanished.
THESE are the types of scumbags that need to be ridden out of Silicon Valley on a
rail.

When viewing a tribe's picture album, there used to be the choice of seeing 6 items at a time, 24 items at a time, or the entire album.

The "entire album" option has been removed.

Is there any reason for this? Can it be restored? Can we have personal settings so that, for instance, I always see all the pictures, whereas someone on dialup may choose to always view 6 at a time?

Hi, I use to have good conversations here.
Now tribe is basically dead i am afraid.
I am sorry because it was my favorite social tool online.
The sad thing is that the conversations didn't go elsewhere, they died here. People discussed serious stuff here.
A lot of the groups I use to like and participate have no similar ones in other social tools.
Why did tribe fail?
I guess it was too many ads. People reject that.
Where did most people go when they left tribe?

"related tribes", but for a person?

I just had an idea that I for one would love to see. It would be similar to the "related tribes" function in a tribe, but this would be for an individual. The logic would be: take all the tribes a person belongs to, find all the people in those tribes, find all the tribes those people are in. Then, rank by frequency, trim out any tribes the original person is already in, and report the top 10-20 of the result. (Or perhaps it could have a "more" button and you could see more than the top 10-20)

Let it be a module that one could add to one's homepage.

The accounts already have numbers.

I suggest these could be shown on the avatars of those unsubbed.

Why?

Because the value of much of Tribe.net's content stands to outlive users and their accounts,
but it is difficult to follow threads in which more than one person is unsubbed.

If they were numbered, future analysts of this early internet data would have an easier time making sense of it in terms of who is speaking to whom.

In fact, such a feature would already be of some use to me in conjunction with the random thread button I suggested.

U.S. Rep. Paul Broun is again raising the specter of Democrats turning the United States into a totalitarian state.

Broun, R-Athens, apparently has not changed his belief that President Obama may be a fascist since he made similar remarks in Augusta in November and then in an Associated Press interview.

He told a meeting of the Morgan County Republicans on Wednesday night that Obama already has or will have the three things he needs to make himself a dictator: a national police force, gun control and control over the press.

"He has the three things that are necessary to establish an authoritarian government," Broun said. "And so we need to be ever-vigilant, because freedom is precious."

As he did when comparing Obama to Hitler and the Soviets last year, Broun cited a speech Obama gave in Colorado during the campaign last July calling for "a civilian national security force that's just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded" as the military.

In the speech, Obama called young Americans to serve both at home and abroad, and said he would expand the Peace Corps, AmeriCorps and other volunteer opportunities. Broun, however, said Obama was referring to a national police force.

"'The liberals say, 'What is wrong with Americorps?' " Broun said. "Well, this is not Americorps."

Broun also said he thinks the national media is openly supporting Obama's policies. He also said he believes the president and Attorney General Eric Holder will enact new gun-control policies.

Holder said in February that he wants to renew a Clinton-era ban on assault weapons, but Obama said in April that he is putting the issue on the back burner.

Broun also cited the dozens of so-called "czars" Obama has appointed to oversee areas like the troubled car industry as evidence that he is overstepping his bounds to seek power.

"They're developing a shadow government that (does not) answer to the American people," Broun said.

At a town hall meeting in Clarkesville last month, Broun called Obama, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid a "socialistic elite" and agreed with a constituent who said they might use a flu pandemic to declare martial law.

"They're trying to develop an environment where they can take over," Broun said. "We've seen that historically."

More than 1,000 people combined turned out to hear Broun speak mostly on the topic of health care at town hall meetings Wednesday in Madison and Greene County.

About 300 attended the Madison meeting. At Lake Oconee, the audience filled three 300-seat movie theaters, where Broun spoke on the invitation of three local doctors who have been giving presentations on Democrats' proposals for health care reform, said Bob Cowles, one of the organizers. Broun spoke live in one theater, while crowds in the other two listened in over a closed circuit.

Health care reform also is about Democrats seeking more power, Broun said.

"It gives them more power, more control over your life," he said.

Health care is too expensive, he said, and he attributed the cost to government regulations like HIPPA, a 1996 patient privacy and insurance portability law. Rather than create a government-run insurance program to compete with private insurers, the current system's framework should be kept, but with changes like expanded tax-free health savings accounts, more tax credits for medical expenses and tax breaks for doctors who provide charity care, Broun said.

"Just like (when) you have a dog with fleas, you don't kill the dog, you put on a flea collar," he said.

Ok, so this is the place to make a few suggestions for improving tribe?

Well here’s my tuppence worth…

1) Babble..( http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/8204842.stm) when is anything going to be done about pointless posts that have no meaning? By that I mean one liners or single words that communicate what the poster is currently doing (i.e. eating a sandwich), make no sense whatsoever or convey their approval/disapproval of another post without actually qualifying it…. In general a post of less than ten words is almost certainly going to be babble…and once a thread becomes little more than a list of whoopps and yahs it kills discussion…. is it not possible to add a feature to the submit button that counts the words and denies the post on the grounds of insufficient content? It cant be that difficult since many of the old chat/date sites (I don’t use them anymore.. resigned to being single..ahh) used to prevent one from joining unless some personal data was entered.

2) Verbal Diarrhoea… yes thos excessive posts that have more in common with PhD dissertations than a meaningful contribution to a discussion. The ones that are invariably the product of a paste and copy exercise from a web site (plagiarism) than the diligent fruits of the literaturist burning the midnight oil … in this respect just as a minimum word count would go a long way to stopping babble so a maximum (lets say 1000 words) would stop what amounts to political filibustering or lawyers bundles but best described as verbal diarrhoea.

3) So you agree do you? Well then why do we have to find out through endless babble saying ‘right on’, too true… can you at tribe not add a recommend button (i.e. like the bbc’s have your say http://newsforums.bbc.co.uk/nol/thread.jspa?sortBy=2&forumID=6949&edition=1&ttl=20090903031355&#paginator) or a thumbs up/thumbs down button like youtube http://www.youtube.com/comment_servlet?all_comments&v=b1yMhuHymWw) such a feature would allow tribe members to voice a view anonymously, a particularly useful feature where a discussion has become polarized and offensive and anonymity would prevent a person from subsequently being labelled or attacked just for having a different opinion (some people are shy but that shouldn’t be just cause to silence them)

Getting rid of babble, verbal diarrhoea and adding a feature that encourage members to participate without actually posting would I aver greatly increase inclusion and make for far better posts and threads

Anyway I just spotted someone trying to cross my bridge so I gotta go and throw them off .. a trolls work is never done….

Bug Problems?

When I came to the main page before signing in there was a post by someone I wanted to read. Then I wanted to look at the guys profile cuz I thought he was handsome as hell of course. The bearded guy talking about a pirate festival. Anyway, usually when you do that Tribe will prompt you to sign in. It did. But it kept taking me to the same sign in page and wouldnt let me sign in. So I just clicked on the orange Tribe logo and signed in that way. Then I find the guys post again. I click on his avatar again. Then it takes me to the sign in screen again. OY! So frustrating. How is he ever going to know I'm in love with him if I can't tell him?!!! HELLO!!!

surveying capabilities

i think it would be cool if there where surverying capabilities for posts and tribes.

For example..

in moderator elections.. one can simply put the choices and people click on categories as a vote

the results could be updated realtime in the main post heading or something.

or in asking questions of the group in pareto style.. one can see how a group is thinking..not just individuals..

what do you think?

Can iMix scripts be embedded (functionally) on tribe profile &/or blog pages...

My first-ever iMix has been prepped for sharing with the LOST - ABC TV tribe but I am experiencing difficulty in figuring out how to embed the iMix script at my tribe profile so folks can just click on it and go directly to it. Is this possible, does anyone know?

If not possible on Tribe, then --as a work-around-- does anyone know of a tribe-accessible website elsewhere where I can get a page, embed the iMix script on it such that it is "live" and functional, then link _that_ "elsewhere" page in my tribe profile so the iMix is reachable via two clicks (first from my tribe profile to that page elsewhere, then a second click from the embedded iMix link to the iMix music playlist itself)?

Thanks for any techno-alms you can share for the technologically perplexed and depoverate.

BTW, here is the iMix playlist script I have been unsuccessfully attempting to embed and have function on tribe:

ANYWAYS!!! I havent been on Tribe for 4 or 5 days cuz me wuz chillin' in Humboldt for duh 4th. If so please forgive me for not seeing it in the past. friends subsets

This may have been discussed before. I'd like to see the ability to have a subset of my friends that I could for instance give access to certain blog entries. The idea being that if I want to blog about something highly personal, I'd like to have only the subset of friends see it, so I could share it with just them, not my 400 friends. Yes, I could cut back my friends list, but this is a social network. I think that would be counterproductive.

Active threads?

Here is an idea for the next release. If this could be added as either a default or optional module, I think it would be awesome.

How about having a window for the last 20 'active threads' for all the tribes you belong to in one place? Sometimes I have my favorite tribes but miss discussions in less active tribes that I visit less often. Considering that tribe has slowed down considerably and there are lots of ghost tribes, I think active threads might breath some new life into them, speeding up how fast and easy it is to reply. You would only see the active threads for the tribes you belong to.

Perhaps if you want to get a little fancier, maybe you could add or remove tribes that are hooked up to your active threads. Maybe if one tribe is too busy you dont want it to overwhelm your active threads module, so you remove it. It might be more incentive to click on a link if the specific topic interests you and not just a hidden thread in a tribe you belong to.

Levels of Friendship

(using my blog) I've started thinking about reducing the number of friends on my list.

But that also got me thinking about friends on here.
I already tried to separate the Girls from the Guys and the Redheads from the Rest. That I try to maintain by hand.
I seem to think that if I also had Icons (or colored dots) to show more detail.

Have we discussed (recently) creating Levels of Friendship?

I see 4 Levels of Friends:
Level A - Acquaintances
Level B - Buddies
Level C - Consultants
Level D - Dearest

Level A are people that see me on here, maybe want to follow my posts, but never really correspond direct with me.
Level B are those that I truely talk to on here either directly or thru the discussion threads.
Level C I'm not sure about, but maybe people like Carolyn that are Tribe Staff or Moderators of tribes I belong too.
Level D are (for me) the people I know in RealLife...the BFF thing

Preferred the old status page

Rather than just Twitter updates.

The old Status page with all it's colorful red, yellow, green indicators gave me instantaneous real-time knowledge of the current status of the servers and the network as a whole. Without anyone having to post anything.

Now if there are problems, it's back to hoping that someone will post a message eventually. I had problems getting on earlier. But the last Twitter was from ages ago.

This is what I am seeing right now, it's just a Twitter feed:

I can look that up on my own, via Twitter. If Tribe.net is down, that status page will probably be down too, making it TOTALLY USELESS!!! And it's a duplication of what already exists on Twitter.

We NEEDED the Status available in real time. I really believe that we NEEDED it, because this site has had a history of going up and down and having problems with various servers.

It would be even better if there was a way to tie the former Status into Twitter feed that would generate messages, such as:

Restart your browser and try to load the site again
or
The site is completely down

Something that would read the old Status info, and know that there was only one finicky server and that it would probably work fine if the person would restart their browser (to get on a different server perhaps).

A Twitter message from two days ago does nothing to help anyone right now who cannot get online.

Why are they all so old? The entries are all from 2004 every time I'm getting ready to log on. Do people still believe a review from 5 years ago?

Has no new reviews been posted to the "local favorites" category? Because something is broken? If not, can you change it in the next release to show the most recent "local favorites" reviews.

It's just one of those things that most likely stops possible new members from joining. It looks like nothing much happens around here in '08 or '09.

Plus, I'm tired of seeing the same old reviews all the time.

USO TV Ad As I Envisioned It In My Recent Award Winning Holiday Song!

No, I'm not delusional but in my songwriting I usually try to include something about our troops. I have a master plan in my writing Christmas Songs and I have written 12 of them. The last holiday song that I wrote, " Ho, Ho, Ho! Yes...No, No, Snow!" I wrote the Key of E with the second chorus being in the Key of A. There was a prelude, 3 verses, Bridge, Chorus and 2nd chorus. and I got an award for the song. On TV recently I have seen a commercial for the USO with a soldier in a Humvee that is in a desert area and he stops at the USO place(?) and you hear laughter. This is somehow how as I imagined what it might be like for military personnel without being in a snowy area and this is uncanny to see, wonderfully fun. This is how I saw it in my mind. Here's the 2nd verse:

Night vision goggles brighten rocky ridged desert.
Humvee rolls down the road with platoon in concert.
Temps soar for young GIs as Christmas Eve approaches.
Rain is forecast but he hears some USO laughs.

I actually referenced deserts in Iraq on the internet. There are wadis etc. and one southern desert is rocky and ridged. There is no platoon in the ad but to me after working with Militaryfamillies.com on learning about planes such as C-14 cargo planes? etc. for writing "Christmas Special Delivery," in 2003 it sure is like seeing something that I thought materializing and it's wonderful. No, the ad doesn't include the bridge of, "ice crusted gloves shoveling, snow plowing, snow blowing. Cold storm growing I don't miss it when it's snowing!" This is just an after thought. Soldiersradio.com sent me Holiday card in 2003 and the U.S. Army's Christmas CD. Notice how he takes off his gear when he enters the USO place? (Maybe 'cause it's warm?)

Kind of uncanny seeing something you create visualized other than just listening to it! I'm just pleased! Does anyone see the correlation? I sure do...and thanks for the USO as they assist with so many military families. Currently I'm writing an election song. Also this year another Christmas song(probably gospel rock) coming as my ideas outweigh my work. Brainstorming as usual and it helps that I can write notes as easily as I write words. I keep thinking of M. Jackson's talk on TV when he spoke of the baseline beat....hook of "Billie Jean." He was all music, being a great hero of mine and I am just the songwriter.

Just thought that this was unusual but maybe only I saw the correlation. I can't imagine what Stephan King thought when he saw "Carrie" or Tom Clancy thought of when he saw "The Hunt For Red October" produced.

I probably am imagining things seeing this ad but it sure is uncanny.....as that's what I thought of what it might be like in a no temperate zoned place for the military outside of the mentioned platoon because I was depicting places people are at where there might not be snow. It all fit into the song, and I'm am proud to have included my 2nd verse about overseas troops.

More than anything I hope the USO gets it's message across. This is the point of the ad!
Wow.....kind of pleased....though....right after I wrote it in 2008. What do you think?

Shown title length should be possible to configure by the individual user OR maybe by the moderator of each tribe, and I think the default should be alot more than the current 47 characters. For instance 100.
Some tribes and users are dedicated to chatting, and they can probably do fine with 47 characters of title, but some of us want to communicate on more complex matters, and for us I think it would be suitable if longer titles were shown.
For instance I would have liked to use the following title for a recent post (in the Sacred Sexuality tribe):
"The higher purpose of Sacred Sex in the current phase of human evolution - about the missing understandings of the traditions of sacred sexuality" (145 characters)
English is not my mother tongue, but how would YOU communicate that in a meaningful way if only the first 47 characters are shown?

If I have someone on ignore, I don't want them in my tribe(s). I don't want them to have another way to send me PMs.

There are times when I remember a topic that was discussed in my tribe a while back and would like to simply revive the thread rather than start a new. I can remember the title, but never the date... so I skim page by page trying to find it. I wish there was a search box I could simply type in the title... or maybe words associated, and it would pop up all related threads.

Is this a possibilty, or too complicated?

when i go to look for new tribes to look at, i found most popular tribes. but there are only 3 listed.
so i clcked on a category i like but ther eis no way to sort those tribes that i could see.
i was thinkig it would be nice to see which of those tribes are active and which are popular.

One clue that an on-line death was faked is when there continues to be activity on the account. I have noticed this in several tribe.net reported suicides. The continued activity is usually reported as a friend or partner having been given or obtained access to do some "housekeeping" on the deceased person's account, but I find this highly improbable. Or it is reported as tribe.net employees actually having gone into the account for some kind of administrative or housekeeping reason. Also highly improbable.

In my view, if there is any continued activity on an account of a person who reportedly died, the reported death is likely a fake. The likelihood that anyone was given the passwords by the deceased, could find the passwords, or was granted access by the administrators of tribe.net seems remote to me.

Having said that, I have no knowledge or opinion on any particular death or suicide that has been reported on tribe.net. I did not know any of these people or interact with them.

Community Overlord?

The type of interpersonal issues that happen here aren't necessarily tribe-specific. They're actually pretty typical of any open-forum internet user community.

I just read a post on Daily Kos, in which Kos addresses similar concerns, and proposes a solution: http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2009/5/31/737141/-Your-new-community-overlord

The part of Kos's post I find particular relevant to tribe is this:

In my experience, administrators don't like enforcing TOU stuff. Somebody always gets mad and yells at them, and nobody likes to be yelled at. The result of this is often that either stuff is enforced randomly and arbitrarily, or not at all. Neither of these is good.

In my experience also, user communities are pretty much largely ok with rules, as long as they are clear, fair, and consistently enforced. Like kids, I guess.

Would it be possible, once the technical issues are stabilized once and for all, for NSA to have some sort of Community Overlord?

Pending friend invitations; Redux

Perhaps I should have been a bit clearer and more specific in my initial post on this topic but I was referring to invitations where you ask an existing tribe member to be added as a friend. I like the fact that these invitations are not limited to a couple hundred characters and that the replies end up with your other messages but wish the message in my outgoing invitation was included with the reply as with a normal message. It also would be nice if these in-network invitations, while they are pending, could be included in the pending invitation folder along with invitations sent to people not yet tribe members.

Since the idea to "delete old tribes" comes up every few months around here, I have an idea.

NSA creates a profile called "Tribe Archivist" and kicks out the moderator, takes it over, and boots everyone from the tribe, and sets flag to moderated. I would say no activity for 2 years would be sufficient.

This way, the posts are still there, and nothing is changed, however anyone joining tribe or finding teh group would see that it's "archived" and don't join, expecting people to say anything.

This is a work around for the current revision. Tribe 3.0 needs to have a mechanism for this to happen that's better executed, but this would work for now.

Brainstorm membership do-over

I'd like to suggest that Brainstorm (and Bugs) become moderated tribes and all members be removed.

In order to gain admission to Brainstorm, former members must link to some of their previous contributions.

New members would provide a brief description of their idea before being allowed to join.

While the idea of having an open door is a good one, it is constantly abused. And creates a tribe that no one wants to post any ideas just in case someone goes off on them.

It's also a good idea to create our own tribes if we don't like the way a particular tribe is run. But that doesn't work for official tribes. And the official tribes should be more on track.

No one is banned, if someone gets removed for being a problem (including me), they can be readmitted just like any other member who has an idea and provides a description of the idea in their request to join.

Tribe.net/NSA has the ability to check accounts, to see who has what alts or whatever. There's absolutely no need for anyone to have more than ONE of their many names in this tribe at any time.

That alone would make for a more satisfying experience. Less suspicion and more interaction between the people who are members.

And delete the obvious trolling posts. They have no business being here.

Site-wide restraining order idea

We know that unsubbing people doesn't work. They just come back. And there is no currently available remedy to prevent that.

However, I wonder if their is such a thing as a web site considering using a legal restraining order against an individual to prevent (by law) that person from rejoining?

Obviously it won't physically bar them from signing up again, if they want to. But it would provide the website with some kind of protection? Or a way to have that person fined? Or arrested? Or somehow punished, in a real way. Something that will enter their daily life, something that will be on file with their police department or court or county.

It would have their real name and/or isp and/or their aka/aliases.

There is even a business potential. A pay-per-access search business that would carry the records of banned users and known information that could be accessed by other isps or site administrators. It's more than the rumor mongers, so no one can start a bunch of gossip and have the person they are gossiping about show up...no, it's real legal stuff, that a site has pursued.

This also gives TOU some teeth. Fines or legal paperwork would discourage some of the people from doing what they do. Especially if they do it from work. ISPs are traceable. Tribe.net can find out what ISP you are using and notify that ISP. Just like we can notify an ISP ourselves when we get spam mail from one of their members.

Results may vary. Yahoo doesn't seem to put up with spammers. But what what if it's a business? What business account wants to find out that one of their users in their business is harassing people? That would put a stop to the usage of the internet for "personal use" at that business in many cases.

So that the offender not only effectively gets themselves blocked by their boss, so does everyone else in that business. And they won't look upon the one who is ultimately responsible (the one dumbass who harassed people) too kindly.

if you are lonely .... log off tribe and go out and meet some people.

If you spend your days fantasizing about how you are going to bring someone's "world crashing down" or bring someone's "days to an end" or get a court order against someone you interact with on tribe .... log off tribe and get a grip on reality.

Is it going to continue to be a troll tribe or actually be about tribe.net ideas?

Or is there a difference?

What would be cool is if this tribe was a neutral ground. Like Switzerland.

A place where people could discuss matters of importance to tribe without all the usual trolling, hating, flooding, psychopathy, etc.

Memorial Day

They take it seriously in my town. Lots of big Italian families, lots of blue-collar families who've lost people to war or to accident or illness. Huge family dinners.

Right now, just now, out of the blue, because she knows I'm on my own today and approves of my iris garden, the next door neighbor lady brought me dinner: a bbq chicken leg, potato salad, macaroni salad, baked beans, green salad with ranch dressing, a couple of ham cubes, and a buttered biscuit--the feast her family is having.

An hour ago, she showed me her new great-grandbaby--a gorgeous little girl named Isabella--3 months old, with her fuzzy dark hair just growing in. Her own daughter, a new grandmother now my age, smiled at me with that combination of friendliness and suspicion all daughters show to friends of their mothers who are approximately their own age.

I never knew Sunshine (I think she said something mean to me once, years ago, but it was witty, so I laughed and didn't mind, and that was the extent of our exchanges), but any loss here is a loss to the whole community, and it ripples in different ways, and I sorrow just the same.

If I could send you all a lovely bit of the dinner of your choice, for Memorial Day, I would.

XSPF-y Update

We need something that can tell who has seen our page. like, who's been looking but not sending invites or something... i don't know its like 18 people have seen me and I don't have a clue as to who so you should put an OWL for the add and a click button that says who's been viewing your profile.?

Map feature for canadian events

It would be great if we could use the map feature for canadian enents as it is right now when i make an events on the events page it knows im in canada but when when i try and map it out in the map section it will only show us map know canadian data (do u get your map info from google maps"

What to do with acquaintances.

I've said it elsewhere, but I want y'all's take on an issue that I think is central to TRIBE.net's core value:

I've been invited to join a number of individuals' networks, but I've declined... I'm a firm believer that the FRIENDS network is a trust network, and that it won't be worth a hill of beans if there isn't a substantial relationship between the point of origin and their first degree.

I mean, what value is it to me if I want to buy/sell/share something with my network if their "friends" are nothing more than strangers who were handy at making decent first impressions? It's not much value at all! If the only difference between TRIBES and FRIENDS is a degree or two of randomness, then why have a FRIENDS channel to begin with?

Whenever I talk to folks about TRIBE.net, I talk about how revolutionary and useful it is that TRIBE.net incorporate three different ways to build one's network: a trusted channel (FRIENDS); an affinity channel (TRIBES); and an exchange channel or marketplace (LISTINGS) — each one offering a slightly different value-add to the mix.

The value of this mix is threatened, though, by the high incentive folks have to artificially expanding their FRIENDS network with complete strangers: there's no way to expand it substantially without compromising the value of the trust that should be had between the origin and its first degree.

So... I've been thinking: What if there were an ACQUAINTANCE node in the FRIENDS network? What if I could invite someone, not into my _first_ degree, but into my _second_ (and their friends into my third) and vice versa? ... Then I could still grow my FRIENDS network without diluting the meaning of a first degree — a group of folks that I know, and can recommend wholeheartedly.

I've heard other recommendations, including a grading system for first degree members and the like. But these seem to difficult to implement, too confusing to guarantee wide support, and still compromise the value of the first degree.

Can someone please tell me why my bio and all of my tribe friends are listed on a site I have never been to or heard of? I didn't think this was Tribes style. I feel cheated and betrayed. If I wanted my profile to be farmed out, I would join Facebook.

This is a small request, i think.

I have noted that you list how many views there have been at our profiles. (I'm currently at 1625!) But when you click on that information, it simply takes you to your profile.

Why not make it that clicking on that information gives you a list of who took the time to look at your profile?

I mean, to be able to chat real-time with other Tribe members? How awesome would that be? Or, how bothersome.........

BUT! I'd love the opportunity at least. More than music or this or that - chat would be a very well-used feature.

Active Members Idea

Rather than having those six slots occupied by people who just update their profile, how about those six slots being used for the last six posters/members who posted?

It would give people an instant idea of who is participating RIGHT NOW in any given tribe at any point in time.

Active members = PARTICIPATING members.

Some people are joiners and join every single tribe, and then bless everyone else with their avatar image in every single tribe, because they update their profile every single minute. LOL!

But they don't DO anything in every single tribe. Some people don't even post in various tribes, they just join and lurk.

So how about making Active = Participate, with the option to sort members alphabetically, by date joined, and by last activity?

I'm more interested in the participating members, and learning more about them, than I am in seeing the images of lurkers parading across the top of the screen when they contribute nothing to the discussions.

Maybe at the bottom of an in-mail message you could add a "Report Spam" button option along with "Save" ,"Reply" , "Delete" "Forward" instead fo having to go through all the multiple steps to accomplish this??

"Prelude In A Major!"

I wrote a "piece" as stated that is in the genres of Beethoven, Mozart, not Chopin, others that included scales. Scales or repetition is too, boring! There is an intriicate melodic line similar to "Fur Elise." Cadences, timing, and everything that everyone would want to hear reaching that "high note" is written as such G usually unsharped, C and F sharped flows...and flows about and surrounding the main melody.
So, now I'm also writing a new prelude, a song about Hawaii(last time I had help from the Univ. of Hawaii at Hilo with a Hawaiian phrase) and M. A. record company has forwarded a song of mine to the late, great IZ's family for consideration.
I try....and it's difficult...but I can write words as easily as notes and I have to try to make this work for me. Wouldn't you?
I'm also beginning a new Christmas Song(I've written 12) and this is another part of "the season" that will be written.
Such a challenge at the piano...

What are tribe's resources?

I understand that NSA has interests in keeping themselves anonymous, although I suspect this will wind up being a mistake in the end. But whatever.

In any event, can we the membership get some information about what resources they've brought to the table?

How many people are involved with NSA?
How many are competant programmers who can fix and/or enhance the site?
How many are competant system/network administrators who can improve the reliability of the site?
What sort of timeline is in the pipe for new features?

Essentially, do you have a plan, and if so, can you let us in on any of it?
What do you need from the membership to help you execute on whatever plan you may have?

The silence was a cute tactic at first, but now it's just old.

has anyone suggested rotating the 'featured tribes' on the login page? It is silly and annoying to see burningman every damn time I login. Its a great chance to highlight tribes with high, or changing traffic, and there is no point in putting the same tribes there all the time.

The "A little change" thread made me wonder if it is a good idea to have something for tribes like the testimonials feature on peoples profiles. Like there could be a function on all tribes that you could click on that serves one purpose. That purpose would be for people that find a new tribe could read peoples comments about what they like about the tribe they are looking at. People could post what they like or dont like about a tribe. Or maybe there could be a separate positive and negative rating icon? I know people can and do post these types of comments on regular threads anyway. But I wonder if it might be cool to have something like the testimonial function for specific tribes. Like something every tribe can have. And if the mod and or the people on the tribe dont prefer to have that feature on their tribe they could choose not to have it. Or it could be automatically on every tribe. And if people don't care to look at it then they don't have to.

Deleting a thread really pisses off the other people in the tribe.

Locking a thread is the happy middle ground for a moderator. It preserves the conversation (avoiding claims of censorship) while capping it and preventing the conversation from continuing down whatever ugly road it started to go down.

Instant Messaging/Chat Function

Searching the topics in this Tribe I see that there have been suggestions in the past concerning the need/desire for a messaging/chat-type function. I would love to be able to message my friends w/o going out to Yahoo or AIM. I see this as a major hole in what otherwise is a wonderful service. Surely it is not that huge a technical issue. Gmail and most dating sites have a chat function.

Hope that you will give this suggestion serious consideration,

So I am racking my brains for an idea to offer..

How about this ?

A private tribe might serve as a great, cheap, and instant intranet for not-for-profits (or commercial entities) that do not have the resources to create their own such resources.. Or open public discussion groups for support services and the like.. basically exactly what tribe can (and does) already do...

So the if that is the case, the question becomes how can tribe make a little money from this ?

How about organizations who use tribe like this paying a fee and being offered different TOU protecting privacy or content or sole proprietary rights to intellectual content published in such a tribe?

Basically tribe could use exactly what it already has but on a different TOU Contract which organisations pay for.

And I know it is not a very developed idea.. but this is a brainstorm tribe :)

Consumer law violation

You have a TOU that prohibits stalking, flaming, etc.

But you've admitted you don't enforce it and have no intention of enforcing.

However, you don't mention this in your TOU.

That's a violation of just about every deceptive trade practices statute in the nation.

Well, I think there are a few backward states that don't have any general consumer protection statute. But most of your members live in states that do, and California, your home state, does.

Ya either need to enforce the TOU or get rid of it. It is deceptively misleading to consumers to post a TOU that you admittedly have no intention of enforcing.
