In the Pipe

So, if I renew my paid subscription tomorrow, what can I expect in the next few months other than special feelings in the cockles of my heart?

Merci,

Well, I'm going to be a little bit scarce for the next month. This isn't because I'm avoiding people, it's because I'll be concentrating on a rather large project for tribe.net:

    1) Remember how we were supposed to switch ISPs back in December? Well, the time has come to do that. I am moving the cage at 200 Paul into three cabinet racks, and at the same time I am re-engineering a little of the backend of tribe to make it more stable. This will take a full week or two of work.
    2) I'll be upgrading Java, Tomcat, Apache, and MySQL on all machines.
    3) I'm reworking the Intranet so that other tribe employees can get more reliable statistics without having to bug the crap out of me for them.
    4) I'm eliminating a single point of failure called grapherd -- this program is being rewritten to run on multiple machines instead of just one.
    5) I am working on alpha plugins for Facebook, MySpace, Etsy, Yahoo Stores, LinkedIn, RecipeZaar, Flickr, PhotoBucket, Evite, Going, Twitter, Mosuki, Livejournal, and Yelp.
    6) I am re-engineering the application to deal with RSS updates better.
    7) I am adding widgets from www.addthis.com to all relevant content on tribe, the way MySpace does so we can drive traffic to tribe.net and hopefully make it more relevant.

This is a lot to do, but I'll try to check in at least once a day to check on folks.

Wow, good luck with grapherd. That's a pretty big can o'worms to open up.

        Thanks Darren.

        I'll renew my membership now.

Good luck with that project and find the right work-life balance during this mighty quest.

Not really -- I have a friend I am tapping to rewrite it so it a) runs on multiple machines and b) uses memcached. Out of all the problems with tribe.net, this program has been the bane of my existence from day 1. I know why it's important, but it really could have been coded a WEE bit better.

Oh, I don't disagree. However, it's one of those things that's exceptionally critical to both the performance and the functionality of the site. If there are any slowness issues at all, you'll wind up with a major meltdown. I know what it looks like to have the grapher be not-quite-right, and it's not pretty.
