I wish there was a way to add a search function to old threads.
There are times when I remember a topic that was discussed in my tribe a while back and would like to simply revive the thread rather than start a new. I can remember the title, but never the date... so I skim page by page trying to find it. I wish there was a search box I could simply type in the title... or maybe words associated, and it would pop up all related threads.
Is this a possibilty, or too complicated?

Re: Searching old threads
Fri, June 19, 2009 - 12:02 PMUh, that already works.
On your tribe, there are two search boxes. The one in the upper right corner will search all of tribe. That one is in line with home, my, browse, post.
Farther down, between the six avatars and the first/most recent post is another search box. That is specific for the particular tribe.
If you are searching for a specific phrase, simply add in the quotation marks before and after the phrase you seek.
So, for this tribe, if I just search for your title without quotation marks, I get stuff like this too:
Need easier way to delete old messages - Tribe.net Brainstorm ...
3 posts - 2 authors - Last post: Dec 2, 2008
It has been brought up but the search function needs some work too.. :) We all asked Darren for an easier way to delete old messages.. and ...
Because it has the words "old" and "search" in it.
Using the quotation marks, I get ONE result for "searching old threads" and it's THIS thread. The one you posted.
So, give that a whirl. If you can remember specific thread titles or phrases from within the thread, you can find most of what you're looking for. -

Re: Searching old threads
Fri, June 19, 2009 - 7:25 PMYou're certainly welcome, SN. Let us know if it works the way you expected/wanted it to. This IS the Brainstorm tribe after all.
The two different search boxes are not intuitive, not that user friendly. It kind of looks like a duplicated thing and it's not apparent that one is for all of tribe and one is for just whatever tribe you are on.
There was a time when this tribe had many experienced users, and several employees monitoring it all the time. It wasn't just silliness or trolling or snarky, asinine comments. There was plenty to learn from other people and discussions had jewels of information amidst the trash and the fun.
I'm not trying to step on Carolyn or David, by putting forth information. I can't do what they do. I don't even know exactly what it IS that they are doing. I have no idea what rewriting code or fixing bugs at their end entails.
And I don't really know all that much about this site, because I learn something new all the time. If I knew all about the site, there would be nothing new to learn. But I know a tiny bit, and I'm more than happy to share it, to take the time to pass on the tidbit I know about. And back in the day, there were many people passing on their tidbits, and I learned from them too.
I used to beta test on AOL. Things were constantly changing. What we had would disappear and something new would appear to try out. I had my first computer a week, having mastered turning it on and off, and then went to AOL. And waited at the Welcome screen for "something to happen". After being there a month, I volunteered to beta test. I said that there would be plenty of users that knew nothing, like myself, and that I would do things that new people might do that experienced users would NEVER do.
IM reflector on AOL, my idea. Back when hackers would bombard users with repetitive messages to toss them offline, it was my idea that the user should get back whatever they sent right away. Yeah, they still might toss me offline, but they might toss themselves offline too.
Next place I spent time was on Better Homes and Gardens. Their decorating section. That's where I got interested in altering photos. To help people with wall colors of their home. Or to try to create something new for them. I was told by experienced members that I would take something that the experienced people would consider a "lost cause" and wouldn't bother responding to, into my whirlwind of enthusiasm and ideas, resulting in the new people saying "I didn't know what to do, but now I can't wait to get started". That was the greatest compliment I could ever hope for on that Decorating area.
Unfortunately, BHG kept changing their message board provider. Tons of info was lost in the transfer process. All my original "helpful" photos, they are gone. Lost in the transfer. Old features would disappear and new things would appear that no one knew how to use.
Having my bit of beta testing background, I would try out all the new features. Can't make the features come back, the old ones, but let's see what goodies we have now. I became a source for the members. And I would tell them that thus far in my limited computer experience, no flames have ever shot out of my hard drive, no matter what I clicked on. No death rays. Nothing made whatever CD I had in the computer shoot out at the speed of light, slicing me in half.
Click it. Find out what it does. Try this out. Try that out. Compare and contrast. And that lesson not only helped the folks on the message boards, but helped in real life. As one of the ladies had a new-to-her car, and her daughter was learning to drive in it. Daughter didn't know what something did. Neither did mother. Mother remembered what I had taught, and she actually used the words to try it and see what happens, because flames aren't going to shoot out.
I don't remember what it was, but no flames did shoot out, and no one was ejected from the passenger seat. I found many bugs by clicking around. I also ended up subscribed to a French "tips and tricks" newsletter. For many years. Because I had clicked and clicked and ended up on AOL France. I don't speak French. So I didn't know how to unsubscribe. LOL.
I reported bugs on porn sites. LOL! Every time I tried to close a window, it would make a new porn window. Yeah, people are going to look at that too, or just click around like I did.
So, after all this babbling of my entire computer history, I have two points...
1. If you don't know what it does, click it. Does it do or not do what you think it should do from what it appears to be? Provide feedback to NSA, so maybe they can change the name of the thing. For this thread, they might be able to make it so that the tribe-specific search says in every tribe "Search (tribe name here)". So for this tribe, it would be "Search Brainstorm" and at the top it would say "Search all of tribe.net".
2. If you DO know what it does, help others when you can. Provide instructions as if you are talking to someone who has almost no computer knowledge, and no tribe.net experience. That makes the information you provide accessible to EVERYONE. The more experienced users can skip over the steps they already know. The brand-new user who hasn't figured out how to post or join tribes will be able to follow along step by step. And they might not know how to do ANYTHING until someone posts "How to do it".
Because there WILL be people who just started using a computer. None of us were born with that knowledge. And if they "sit at the Welcome screen waiting for something to happen" like I did, they will never be posting or joining if SOMEONE doesn't help them out.
I REMEMBER my first IM on AOL. SCARED THE CRAP OUT OF ME. I fell out of my chair. I wasn't expecting anything to suddenly appear. And I know I scared my mum, way back when I sent her an IM. She didn't quite get the hang of it, didn't like "those things". LOL! She was fine with mail. But NO IM's.
If you think you know something, post it. If it's wrong, someone might be able to correct it, and you learn. If it's right, someone else will learn. -

Re: Searching old threads
Fri, June 19, 2009 - 7:43 PMP.S. A special thanks to Lisa for the BHG photo alteration. We were lunatics. In fact, I gave us the name "DeCoRaTiNg LuNaTiCs" because we'd practically take over some poor soul's thread pasting in art and carpet and rugs and accessories and all kinds of other things. I'd imagine that she and I had pushed the poor homeowner into a closet and demanded their credit card to remake their entire room.
Golly, we had a LOT of fun.
What I totally missed and she slightly missed (sometimes) was that people were looking for pats on the back. We could always come up with something *WE* thought would look better and she and I would battle each other for what we THOUGHT would look better. Totally ignoring the original poster!
I still say that Lisa and I need a TV show. I like her so much that I want to move to the area she lives in. Just so we can be the "DeCoRaTiNg LuNaTiCs" in the same neighborhood. Plus, it would be nice to be around her kids and grandkids because I have neither.
