Can someone please tell me why my bio and all of my tribe friends are listed on a site I have never been to or heard of? I didn't think this was Tribes style. I feel cheated and betrayed. If I wanted my profile to be farmed out, I would join Facebook.

I apologize if this has already been discussed.

Thu, February 28, 2008 - 6:07 PMAt first glance...I seem not to be listed on ex.plode.us

Re: What is ex.plode.us and have we been sold out?
Thu, February 28, 2008 - 6:15 PMThe TribeCast module is capable of doing that; publishing a Tribe friends list on another site.
Since you didn't so it yourself a guess would be that some database corruption here has swapped stuff from your account into someone else's TribeCast.
That would be a very bad thing. Accidental, but very bad.

Re: What is ex.plode.us and have we been sold out?
Thu, February 28, 2008 - 6:25 PMI don't even know what a TribeCast is and I've never published my Tribe info anywhere else. Can anyone from Tribe help me resolve this? I don't know where to begin to get myself off that other site. I'm reluctant to create an account there because I fear it will prompt more garbage since they certainly don't seem reputable. -

Re: What is ex.plode.us and have we been sold out?

Re: What is ex.plode.us and have we been sold out?
Thu, February 28, 2008 - 6:28 PMIt could be that the other site is harvesting the data rather than Tribe passing it along.

Re: What is ex.plode.us and have we been sold out?
Thu, February 28, 2008 - 7:08 PMWhy do I appear in Explode?
Explode is a search engine that gets its data from information that has been made publically available. Our crawlers respect robot.txt and we do not attempt to gather any infomration that has been marked as anything other than 'public'.
Therefore, if you appear in an Explode search, this is because you have made your information available to the public. -

Re: What is ex.plode.us and have we been sold out?
Thu, February 28, 2008 - 7:21 PM"you have made your information available to the public"
Can I make my Tribe profile "private" so that it cannot be harvested from sites like explode? -
-
Re: What is ex.plode.us and have we been sold out?
Thu, February 28, 2008 - 7:29 PMIt's my understanding that the html coding of the pages has to contain something that disables the robots that mine the sites over the internet, i.e. the robot.txt or some such thing. dunno...

Re: What is ex.plode.us and have we been sold out?
Thu, February 28, 2008 - 8:13 PMI had a bunch of sleezy IM's to the email address I use for Tribe (I rarely get strange IM's to that email addy) so I googled it and found my Tribe profile on explode. It was right near the top. -

I'm on there too.

I don't use FOAF and I don't list my email or IM addresses or anything else in my tribe profile.
very weird.

I don't think there is really much tribe can do. trolling for text is pretty much impossible to stop.
I would say it is inadvisable for anyone to include personal information in a publicly viewable online profile. hell that even goes for "private" tribes. -
-
Re: What is ex.plode.us and have we been sold out?
Thu, February 28, 2008 - 9:57 PMWell, then is there a way to eliminate the FOAF variable here, if that is the culprit?

Re: What is ex.plode.us and have we been sold out?
Thu, February 28, 2008 - 10:18 PMI find this interesting - many of my friends are listed there, but when I look through their friends lists, I don't see me, and I also didn't show up when I did a search for my name. Also see "via tribe" under the photos/avatars. I wonder why some and not all have been mined? And yes, I am relieved that I am not found there...

Re: What is ex.plode.us and have we been sold out?
Thu, February 28, 2008 - 11:11 PM<<did you check for all 92 of your friends? >>
No. I found friends and went through their friends lists, then would pick another friend from the list and went through their friend list and so on and so forth. Also did a name search and didn't come up.
I have used 2 names here, but the first one was only 'in play' briefly, and that was about 2 years ago (I think)

Re: What is ex.plode.us and have we been sold out?
Thu, February 28, 2008 - 10:36 PMI'm there, and I think I'm not going to lose much sleep over it.
Internet + privacy = oxymoron.
For every listing like this we're aware of, there's maybe a 100 or more you or I don't even know exist. Computers are fast and cheap. They don't make for very hot dates, though.

Re: What is ex.plode.us and have we been sold out?
Thu, February 28, 2008 - 10:47 PMNisey, try putting your name in exactly as it is in your Tribe moniker (with the colon, etc.).
I'm there, not only for Tribe, but for my LJ and Flickr account as well. -

Re: What is ex.plode.us and have we been sold out?
Thu, February 28, 2008 - 10:43 PMYes, goddammit, I'm there too.
Their "about us" page says they're all about "breaking down silos of active."
Active *what?* Usually what one puts in a silo is "active" only to the extent that it sits and ferments. Wait, you mean there's *no* what? Just "active?" As in Adjective is the New Noun? Well I'll be damned. In a silo?
Isn't the family farm embattled enough without vandalized silos? I don't think I want to be on a site that treats growers like that.
Maybe I'm over-analyzing this.
Still sucks to be there. -

Thu, February 28, 2008 - 10:47 PMAbout Explode
Explode is a social search tool devised by Curverider. What you see here is only the beginning, our idea is to build an application that acts like the glue between social networks; it is all about breaking down silos of active and opening up the web using open standards.
If you would like to contact us, please use the Curverider contact form.

Re: What is ex.plode.us and have we been sold out?
Thu, February 28, 2008 - 11:50 PMI don't think I'm upset. I use the same pseudonym in a lot of places, and it's fairly unique: Google would provide the same information and more -- ex.plod.us currently only has my Tribe, LiveJournal, and Flickr profiles. Ex.plod.us just has nicer packaging.
Actually, with the explosion of social networking sites, I've wondered about ways to consolidate and simplify, at least my use of them. Maybe ex.plod.us will cook up something that I'll find useful.
I wish that I'd at least gotten a nice note from them -- "Hi, we've hijacked your data without asking and look forward to the click-through money that it will provide us when we implement advertising." -- but Google is doing this already, also without any word of thanks.

Fri, February 29, 2008 - 5:14 AM"you have made your information available to the public."
So I guess the real question is how do we flag our Tribe profiles as "private" and how to we take advantage of robot.txt (whatever that is)? -
