Moderator tool idea: Sort/show activity

We individually can show our own activity, and we can choose which tribes we want to show our recent activity in.

But moderators have a different problem, that of many members who may not contribute or even have been active in their own tribe.

So that this new tool would allow the moderator (only) to sort their tribe members by amount of activity: high to low and low to high.

It could have "in the past day", "in the past week", "in the past month" and "forever/beginning of time".

Moderator could then select on of the time frames, select "low to high" and if someone has NEVER posted since the beginning of time they could be removed quickly.

Here's why:
uspolitics.tribe.net/thread/...a00a0023

"He dropped the number from over 3000 to about 1800. His motivation, as far as I could tell was to remove the troll accounts rather than an overall cleansing of the rolls."
------

If there was a sort by activity and check boxes to remove people en masse, a page of people could be removed at a time.

There could be numbers shown beneath their names as to how many posts they made. As well as that being an active link that the moderator could click on to see the most recent 25 postings in their own tribe.

That would also make it easier to remove people who bait, flame, troll, spam, disrupt, etc. If a moderator gets a complaint or isn't too sure, they can check the recent postings themselves in their own tribe to see if there is an apparent problem with any one individual.

The moderator would only see that for their own tribe. Not for any other tribes. And no regular members would be able to sort or show or read in that manner. It's purely a moderator tool.

Obviously someone who has not posted in years won't be missed. They aren't contributing anything. And may just be a dormant troll account.

Why remove folks? Like it is sometimes said...watching is participating.

That and some folks just don't always have the time to participate. There's tribes I've been a member for years and have never posted. But I enjoy reading them and chatting via PM from time to time with the other members. Personally I'd hate to come back to my login some day and find I've been removed from a bunch of my tribes just because I haven't posted recently. That's sucky.

Though this tool does have its uses it must be said that not every justification for moderator tools should be troll related. That's a pretty grim focus, to be sure. There's gotta be some balance for the sake of sociability.

I'd like to see this tool go a bit further to help avoid misuse and integrate some forgiveness into it--use it for good rather than for evil. How about providing an associated tool to 'nudge' a member to see if they are alive. And another to en masse put inactive members, by whatever criteria, on moderated status. Or perhaps adding on to a tribe capability allowing a mod to set the tribe to automatically nudge or send a reminder PM to folks after so long a period of inactivity. These kinda things can draw attention away from just a single use tool that tends to focus on the negative aspects of moderating.

Yep. I have several groups which I always read but never post in.

I don't know if it's a good habit or bad habit, but I tend to join to post, and leave after a discussion is done. I don't do that as often with moderated tribes, because it's a pain to want to comment right away and the moderator isn't standing by waiting for my request. LOL!

I feel like I am "taking up space" when I am in a tribe and NOT participating. I can bookmark, and read along just fine. I kind of feel it is a duty and responsibility to post, if i join a tribe.

If everyone felt that way, this site would be crazy active.

I totally disagree that someone is "taking up space" if they are in a tribe and not posting. I prefer to have my home page set up with all the tribes I'm in listed. As far as I know I can't do that with bookmarking. So if there were a general policy that one *has* to post, that would be extremely annoying for the way I use Tribe.

Also, have you considered that if you're nudging people to post who wouldn't otherwise, that the actual content or value of those postings would likely be low to null?

How can we expect to get people to join a tribe if they cannot make a decision as to whether they want to join by reading posts? And yes, there are tribes that I just read, I want the info disseminated by those who are on that tribe, (and expert in that area), but don't post until or unless I have a question. In the long term, I feel that this style of leadership will kill tribe. We WANT participants, not to set policies that will drive away potential members. No one wants to be told they "have" to do something. Especially if it it to grant you membership on the net to a group.

I'm thinking of it as being like a sport. The tribe members are the sports team. The readers are the viewers. Anyone, whether or not they are a member of that tribe or even of tribe in general, can make a bookmark/saved place in their browser for any tribe to visit and read whenever they want.

Tribe itself has a lovely bookmark function on it's own that will allow anyone who is a member to bookmark any tribe or person to check in with later. For instance, I will often bookmark moderators or people I have PMed but do not have on my friend's list. It's very convenient. I also bookmark spammers, LOL, and today saw that three of the spammers have been unsubscribed. Yay!

There are many uses for such a tool. If you are a new moderator to an older tribe, you might want to know right away who the people are that post the most. That's a good thing. Who are the discussion leaders/posters? Also, if you notice someone has NOT posted in awhile who used to post, is everything ok? Have they left tribe? Or taking a break? Have they gone to another tribe for most of their activity? What could be done to bring them back to that specific tribe to start posting again? (member of individual tribe retention).

I realize it's my opinion only, but I prefer to know who the players of the sports team are. You know what I mean? There aren't 1800 people posting in Politics. I don't think there are even 40 people that post regularly. Obviously moderators are free to set whatever rules they want. If they want only members that participate all the time, they should have a tool to identify who actually participates. There is no other way to figure it out, other than to make a list of names and check them off as each person posts, while reading all the posts in the tribe for the past month. Uh, and good luck with that one! LOL!

You, skooter, have a good mind and often have interesting things to say, so I would want you to participate in a tribe. Don't just join it because someone invited you or three of your best friends are in it or it's where the popular kids hang out or the most recent trend is currently happening.

I think it would reflect each tribe's personality much better too. You'd KNOW who was participating, because the moderator might say "participate once a week at least, if you can, and more than just a 'me too' statement".

I'd rather join an active tribe with 15 members participating, than join a dead tribe with 1500 members.

My old little tribe, I would invite people and tell them "don't just join, post something too". And they did! If they joined, they did indeed post. And there was much activity.

"Why remove folks? Like it is sometimes said...watching is participating. "

--It's a power trip. Now that provoking people into an TOU violation by stalking them is no longer a viable "tool", the cyber nutcases are demanding other tools that they can use to gain a sense of power over other members. One in particular keeps demanding all kinds of tools be created to suit these whims.

Tribe.net, we don't need more tools. We need system stability.

      Thank you.

        Seconded.

And we need more people, too...

          More people? But what kind?

Internet junkies (raises hand, sheepish grin)

          Cyber criminals and cyber stalkers?

          Nutcases?

          Worthless internet shut ins?

It must be hard for tribe.net to sell ad space with the current demographic it has going on. Who wants to advertise to a dial up internet stalker who lives on government handouts in a one room apartment?

Advertising dollars are tight these days.
